Beautify Your Room and Extend The Life Of Your Comforters

Cotton Duvet Covers

Cotton duvet covers are probably some of the most versatile and useful items of bedding that you can have in your bedrooms. So what exactly is a duvet cover … and why cotton rather than some other material?

A duvet is simply any kind of comforter or quilt or it could even refer to just a regular blanket. And a duvet cover, naturally, is something that covers your duvet. 100% cotton or other natural fibers will allow your comforter to breathe and will make laundering your cover a simple task.

While duvet covers come in an endless array of textures and fabrics such as silk, velvet, denim, microsuede, toile, linen and flannel, as well as colors too numerous to mention, cotton is by far your best choice. And you can also find organic duvet covers as well as the highly sought after Egyptian cotton duvet covers.

Most duvet covers are machine washable although many of the luxury covers may need to be professionally cleaned. Some of the more popular manufacturers are Thomasville, Veratex, Croscill, Mystic Valley Traders, Feathersound, Eastern Accents, Custom Comfort, and Dwell.

There are many reasons why you might want to use duvet comforter covers. If you use a down comforter then you know that your down has a habit of “escaping” so an extra covering would help to keep down (no pun intended!) the runaway innards.

And while most people think of using a duvet cover to cover a comforter or quilt, you can really cover any type of blanket you want. For summer, you could cover a light blanket, commonly referred to as a sheet blanket – just enough for those of us who like a little covering but don’t want a lot.

In the transitional seasons like spring and fall, you could cover a heavier blanket or maybe two light blankets. And in winter, cover up that down comforter for all that needed additional warmth.

As you can expect or have experienced yourself, putting a duvet cover on your comforter can be a bit challenging or frustrating. Kids and the young at heart will get a kick out of wrestling with that ginormous pillow case while the rest of us might just get frustrated.

And as you would expect, twin duvet covers are much easier to put on than the king duvet covers. But as with most things, once you know HOW to do something, it really is a snap. So here you go …

How To Put On A Duvet Cover

The easiest way to put a duvet cover onto your comforter is to turn the cover inside out, reach up inside to grab the corners, then grab two corners of the duvet, flip the cover over the duvet and shake it down, then button or zip closed. Now that you’ve had a bit of a laugh, here’s the more serious and quicker way to do it -

For larger sizes such as queen duvet covers, you might have trouble holding the comforter and cover because your arm span isn’t long enough. If you run into that situation then here is another method although it does involve going back and forth from one side of your bed to the other. Simply lay the duvet cover on the bed and then slowing and evenly push the duvet into the cover.

Many people are just fine with the duvet cover loosely covering their comforter while others don’t like the fact that the comforter can slide around inside the cover. A simple solution to that is to buy some comforter clips which are an inexpensive, quick and easy fix. Then just clip the cover and duvet together on the inside as you are putting them together and your comforter will stay in place.

Duvet covers come in the same size that all comforters come in so you just need to buy the same size as your comforter. Be sure to check the measurements and then buy accordingly. Although actual sizes may vary slightly by manufacturer, the standard sizes are as follows -

  • Twin – 68 x 88 inches
  • Full/Queen – 88 x 88 inches
  • King – 104 x 88 inches

So regardless of the decor you have chosen for your bedroom, cotton duvet covers are a simple and versatile way to decorate. You can order your cover alone or with matching sheets, shams, pillows, bedskirts and even window treatments. Cheap or discount duvet covers are easy enough to find but you might also want to buy some silk or luxury duvet bedding to slip onto your comforter for that special guest or a special occasion.
